  Re-evaluating my previous review after coming back a couple times with my family.
  
  Food came out great and portions were generous for family style sharing. The beef chow fun in particular had me feeling really nostalgic.
  
  All the food came out quick and tasty.
  Do not come here for dim sum, but definitely try out the other menu items!

  In general, this place is dying.
  
  It used to be one of my fav places around Detroit for rice noodle like 4 or 5 years ago. I used to drive for 20 mins (when I was living in Detroit) only for a bowl of their beef stew rice noodle (not 100% sure about its English name thou). The soup was traditional and fantastic. The beef stew and rice noodle tasted like home (china in this case).
  
  Over the years I probably tried most of the menu. This is supposed to be a Cantonese/Taiwanese style resturant so they expect you to speak either Cantonese or English. If you speak mandarin, you'll feel weird about yourself.
  
  Among all, ill just talk about three of the most typical Cantonese food:
  
  1. Beef fried rice noodle (Gan Chao Niu He): too wet. The rice noodles are too sticky. And there basically is no beef. And this dish is supposed to be dry. If you know Chinese, it's part of its name.
  
  2. Seafood porridge (Ting Zai Zhou): basically is just plain rice porridge. Seafood is minor. And a small bowl is over $8.
  
  3. Dim sum (Zao Cha): it's supposed to be small dishes. They don't provide lots of varieties but that's ok as long as the tastes are fine. I like their chicken flaw. It's the best among all in my opinion.
  
  The decoration is poor thou they just flipped it not too long ago. The major problem I think is it's too dark and the furniture are too old.
  
  The waitress are always rude. At least to me in my memories. The serving time is long. If you go around busy time, expect to be waiting for over 20 mins.
  
  Despite all those issues that have been there all the time, i still used to like it and go there often, mainly because of the taste. But recently, they not only raised the price of everything, and everything comes with less loads. With same money, I can't even make myself full. And the taste dropped down. Given those, all the disadvantages become unacceptable.

  Greetings. I will not patronize this restaurant because they refused to serve my family. Initially, I had a bad experience at a restaurant a few doors down. This was in the early 2000's and will never forget how rude the server was to me and my girlfriend (now my wife). Fast forward to Saturday, August 3, 2019 at 7:30 pm. The family had just finished doing the nature walk off of John R. and 13 Mile and they decided they wanted some authentic Chinese food. My wife suggested the restaurants on John R. I reminded her about the rude server we encountered back in the day, but we decided to be positive and go to another restaurant. We looked on Yelp and we found Chao Zhou. I was still reluctant.
  
  We walked in the restaurant and the server said it would be a 35 minute wait. I looked around and the place wasn't really busy, but okay. We're going to do this. There's seven of us. We chose the biggest table in the room. We received our menus and waited. There was this one family who came in after us and they received menus, beverages, napkins, and started ordering food. It didn't register until the next family walked in and they received the same treatment... menus, beverages, napkins and they started ordering food. Meanwhile, my wife and five children are all looking at the situation like "what's going on"?
  
  Needless to say, I felt that we were discriminated against. I am not one to interject race, but c'mon a 35 minute wait, but other families walk in and get served immediately? I told the server I was very disappointed in the service and I shared my distasteful restaurant experience on other social media platforms. People! It's 2019!  Racial discrimination, gender discrimination, etc. is not tolerated and should not be tolerated. We're foodies. We only come for the good stuff. That's it.
  
  You lost a customer and I will do my best to persuade friends and family to not eat at your establishment.

  I have been going here for the last 6 years.  One of my favorite hole-in-the-wall restaurants providing true, authentic Chinese food.  I am always more than willing to travel the 40 miles from Canton to Madison Heights.
  Since, we started going here in 2013, I am happy that they now have translations for their Anglo customers who read no Chinese.
  Today we had two noodle dishes, some Dim Sum, Salted and peppered shrimp and squid; and an order of salted and peppered shrimp.
  Delicious as always.
  I recommend this restaurant highly.  
  btw - Those who just like American/Chinese food, they have those offerings as well.

  Hole in the wall indeed.  Simple but nice.  Friendly staff but always short handed. Dim Sum takes forever and they run out of stuff. I've never ordered chicken chow mein in my life. While deciding one day what to order I see a massive dish with noodles and piping hot chicken and veg.   I ordered it and call it chicken wow mein.  Fried noodles on the bottom that soften up as you tear into them.   Awesome. Sooooo fine tune the place, hire a waiter  and it will be a gem.
  
  Ok. I'm back again.  Going on 1/2 hour for dim sum wait.  I love the place but it makes a lunchtime visit nearly impossible!!!!!
  
  Chao Zhou.  Go!
